In The Reader, the German government is running after and punishing those who had something to do with the holocaust. Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet) was a former SS guard and is undergoing trial for murder. Hanna has a secret she's ashamed to admit even if it would save her from conviction.

Hanna's former lover, Michael Berg (Ralph Fiennes), realized what her secret was while watching her trial but he chose to keep silent. He has his own secrets. When he was a teenager, he had a sexual affair with Hanna and never admitted it to anyone. He was devastated when Hanna suddenly disappeared. He kept his love for her all those years but was never honest about the affair or his true feelings, resulting in a failed marriage and distance between him and his family. When Michael meets Hanna several years later, he still can't admit his feelings.
